Book Description William S Orr & Co, LONDON, 1846. Cloth. Book Condition: Poor. Jane Loudon (illustrator). 2nd Edition. A poor copy of this beautiful work with 60 hand coloured plates. Classed as poor because the title page is missing; the binding is poor - in marked plain cloth and beginning to detach; and there is a little marking internally. The pagination matches our other 2nd edition copy so this is presumed as second, dated to 1846. The plates are in good condition - there is some brown spotting to edges, and around 3 have a darkened section, again at the edge not affecting the flower image (we have noticed only one plate with a light mark affecting the flower). All have tissue guards - one guard is torn and one has a small hole - most guards have marking. A few text pages have a little marking and p 117 has a repaired tear to the top margin. The final index page has a small hole at the top. This copy would be well worth rebinding. Bookseller Inventory # 031483

Book Description William Smith, London, 1846. Half Leather. Book Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 311 pp. Half brown morocco leather, dark green cloth, all edges gilt. Spine has four raised bands with gilt decoration and gilt lettering with 1846 date. Brown silk ribbon bookmark. Owner's signature on second free end paper. Rubbing to the extremities with boards exposed but not frayed at the corners. Shelf wear and surface scratches to covers. Spine is also scuffed and somewhat rubbed but only the letter "O" in author's name is affected. Some damp staining at the tops of the preliminary and rear blank pages. From pl. 316 to end there is some slight waviness due to the damp that does not affect the text of the index. The hinges and pages are remarkably strong and tight. Most pages are free of foxing. All 60 hand colored plates are present; Plate 7 is opposite the title page. not opposite p. 28 as indicated in the List of Plates. The colors of the plates are bright and luminous. The blank page between p. 2 and Plate 5 is not present. The upper right corner of the blank page between p. 74 and Plate 17 is expertly repaired. This is a desirable copy of the scarce first edition. Loudon's books on gardening and plant identification sold in the thousands and sparked the growth of gardening as a hobby. But her goal was larger: "My object is to enable any amteur who may find a pretty flower growing wild to ascertain its name and some particulars respecting it; and , in addtition.I have ventured to add a few remarks on the botanical construction of most of the plants in the hope of inducing such of my readers as may be unacquainted with botany to study a charming science, which has hitherto been too much neglected." Book Description William S Orr & Co, LONDON, 1846. Full-Leather. Book Condition: Good. Jane Loudon (illustrator). 2nd Edition. A beautiful copy of the 2nd edition in full leather with 60 finely detailed hand coloured plates by Jane Loudon. The full leather binding has raised bands to the spine and gilt title label. Internally there is the bookplate of Frederick Perkins, Chipstead Place, Kent on the front pastedown. There is a record of Chipstead Place being sold by the Polhills to a Frederick Perkins, cited as a brewer in 1829. The binding has some wear to the spine - principally some snagging at the top and general scuffing with a scuff to the title lable and wear on the joints although they remain sound. There is scuffing to the edges of the boards and some wear marks on the boards. Internally the original endpapers are present with slight splitting at the front joint towards the bottom. There is a small crease to a preliminary. The contents are very clean and the plates are VG to fine. There is very small repaired paper tear to the bottom margin of plate 60.
