About this Item

1,000 and 1,350 limitations respectively. Two volumes, issued four years apart, but forming arguably a complete set of the publication. Two other volumes were later published in 1959 and 1963, respectively, but these can be viewed as a separate unit. 4to. 31 by 21.5 cm. 139, 141 plates, [11], 140, 183 plates, [9] pp. A potpourri of topics on bindings, book illustration, typography and the book arts, with a profusion of plates, a good many lucious, and the geographic sweep international, or definitively non-parochial! Topics include Charles Ricketts, O.H.W. Hadank, Carl Ernst Poeschel, the woodcut artist Hans Alexander Muller, illustrator Adoph Schrodter, Dutch, American, Swiss, and Swedish bindings of the period, an extensive article on children's books, flower books, French lithography, Czech typography of Slavoboj Tusars, S.J.A. Symons' press, the Hungarian book artist Dr. Ernst Namenyi, etc. Because of the many plates, the work is one that can be appreciated and plumbed even by those not conversant in German, but certainly the greatest value is to be found on the pieces relating to important book artists of whom there is a paucity of scholarly consideration in the literature. The two volumes are handsome, with their buckram spines and rag textured stationary paper pastedown boards. Both volumes are tight and clean. Bookseller Inventory # 004719

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
