About this Item

"Never before published in book or any other form" stated on front page. 16 oversize newsprint pages. Color illustration by Bill Brook on front page. Back page has the "Vignettes of Life" feature: a series of comic panels by Harry Weinert, collectively titled "Watching Little Acorns Grow." ~In near fine condition, no tears or wear, with some light foxing spots on upper front and back covers near spine edge, and some scattered ones on interior pages near center crease. ~~ The Star Weekly was a weekend supplement to the Toronto Star newspaper, and it was also sold as a stand-alone publication in other cities in Canada. It consisted of four parts: the main section, a magazine section, a comic section, and the novel section. Offered here is the novel section of the Saturday, May 19, 1956 issue, which contains the very first published appearance of Gruber's novel "Buffalo Grass," i.e., it preceded the publication of the first edition in book form. Gruber was a prolific writer of the pulp era, known chiefly for his westerns and detective fiction, and he published over 60 novels as well as material for magazines and original screenplays. Buffalo Grass was made into a movie, as were many of his books, and according to an inset in this issue, the sale of this novel was the highest rate ever paid for a western historical novel. The movie, titled "The Big Land," (and also known as "The Stampeders") starred Alan Ladd and Virginia Mayo. Set in Texas and Kansas after the end of the Civil War, some cattle ranchers attempt to build a small town as a strategic link for a railroad line to connect Texas to the Rio Grande, as a way of helping the cattle business. A love story is mixed in. This scarce "first issue" version of Gruber's novel is an attractive, collectible piece of ephemera. Bookseller Inventory # 001516
