About this Item

8vo. Stiff brown wrappers. 24pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Fine. Tight and pristine first edition of the Fifth Annual R. Gerald McMurtry Lecture, named after this library's long-time second director -- American historian (1906-88), director of the Louis A. Warren Lincoln Library and Museum from 1956 to 1973 and author of more than 200 articles, pamphlets and books about Lincoln. Best of all, this copy belonged to the series' namesake: Laid in is an envelope addressed by a local supporter to McMurtry containing the printed invitation to attend Oates' May 20th lecture at which he delivered this lecture. This copy also bears a choice autograph addition: Tipped to the half-title page is a Typed Letter Signed from Oates, 1p, 6" X 9", Amherst, MA, 28 November 1983. Addressed to "Ralph" (Ralph G. Newman, 1911-98, founder of Chicago's Abraham Lincoln Book Shop). Chats about the galley of his latest book (likely "Abraham Lincoln: The Man Behind the Myths." 1984), which Newman had been sent for review, and comments about "Gore Vidal's novel, 'Lincoln,' due out from Random House next June. I for one am apprehensive. If this tills the wretched fields he plowed in his L.A. 'Times' article a couple of years ago, then it will be a terrible book -- and the worst possible thing to happen to Lincoln in his 175th." Signed simply "Steve" in blue ballpoint. Oates (born 1936) is highly regarded for both his 1977 "With Malice Toward None: A Life of Abraham Lincoln" (discredited plagiarism charges notwithstanding) and his 1982 "Let the Trumpet Sound: The Life of Martin Luther King, Jr." An outstanding association copy. The notable McMurtry Lecture series continued for many years and includes lectures by many top Lincoln scholars. Bookseller Inventory # 41415
