Book Description International Marine Publishing Company, US, 1977. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. ?A Step-By-Step Pictorial Guide. 'Clemens Kuhlig is a craftsman whose skills are reminiscent of an age long past: his meticulous construction of the sailing skiff Cabin Boy offers ample proof. Here, in more than 200 photographs and drawings, is the story of how he built the Cabin Boy. The author explains how and why he chose the John Atkin design for his skiff. He then proceeds to explain the chronological progress of building his boat, from lofting the plans to making wooden cleats . and even a wooden bilge pump. Clemens Kuhlig's laminating techniques form the most distinctive portion of his book: laminated oars, tiller, stem, and gunwales, plus inlaid seats, demonstrate impressive artistry and painstaking craftsmanship. But that craftsmanship began even before the boat-building, since the author hand-made most of his tools. His book includes directions and scale drawings for duplicating these uniquely personal implements. Throughout, Clemens Kuhlig expresses his philosophy of boatbuilding, acting as a spokesman for the again-increasing number of builders in wood. Stressing the aesthetics of wooden boatbuilding, the author points out, too, that whereas plastic boats tend to invite misuse, wooden boats tend to discourage abuse. The Cabin Boy can only inspire awe; although she has the polished look of a boat that you might hesitate to launch, she is a sturdy and well- protected skiff, one that is fully prepared to be confronted by the vagaries of salt air and water. John Atkin, in his Foreword to this volume, calls Clemens Kuhlig a traditionalist by any standard . a special breed . . the ultimate perfectionist. He has said it all.? Book - in Fine [much better than Very Good] brown boards with gilt lettering - a touch bumped and rubbed to the extreme ends of the spine. Contents, light browning to the end papers, title pages and extreme page edges otherwise clean, bright and tightly bound. Dust Jacket - Good Plus - some loss to the top edges professionally repaired with archival tape, price clipped. Size: 10 inches tall by 7 inches. 139 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 500 grams. Category: Ships & the Sea; ISBN: 0877420645. ISBN/EAN: 9780877420644. Bookseller Inventory # A134-1057
