Later one-quarter red morocco leather over marbled boards, spine with five raised bands, set off by gilt panel lines, and black morocco author/title labels, lettered in gilt, in two compartments, lg 8vo. This work consists of multiple parts published in the Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society: volume VII, no. 1-4; volume VIII, no. 2; volume IX, no. 1-2; volume 10, no. 1-4, volume XII, 3 parts; volume XIII, no. 3-4; volume XV11, 2 parts; other miscellaneous parts. There are a total of 365 pages in this work with 16 fine chromolithograph plates - some finished by hand-coloring - most are after paintings by John Gerrard Keulemans, the great Dutch bird illustrator. Cachar is an administrative district in the state of Assam in northeastern India. The flora of Cachar is predominately tropical evergreen forest but there are large tracts of rainforest in the northern and southern parts of the region. This monograph is the first to describe, in detail, the birds of this northeastern Indian region in the state of Assam. The rear (blank) side of 4 plates bear a small and old oval ink stamp of the Bath public library, this same stamp occurs 3 times in the margin of the text, there are no other ownership marks and no signs of use.
