About this Item

First edition, first printing of this satire of New York society in comic pseudo-Greek verse. Illustrated with several full-page engravings and a number of in-text vignettes by C. D. Weldon. The title-page is numbered "688" by hand in ink. According to BAL, the first 10,000 copies printed were numbered and included a slip in order that the owner of the book could enter his or her name as part of a contest to guess the name of the anonymous author of Buntling Ball. "The prize was $1000 which sum was to be divided among all winners; i.e., those able to guess the name of the author. Any "person owning more than one copy of the book, containing the said blank," was "entitled to as many guesses as he may own copies with blanks." 8vo. 154 pp.; illus. BAL 5627. Publisher's brown cloth, front cover and spine with solid blocks of gilt-stamping; edges and extremities showing light wear, gilt slightly dimmed. Title-page with fingernail-sized pink paper adhered at inner margin. Pages clean. Bookseller Inventory # 19458
