An entertaining trade catalogue full of novel, novelty equipment for stage gags and off-beat routines, much of which is now forgotten. 8vo. (8.75 by 6 inches. 22 by 15 cm.) 96, xxxii pp. To give an idea of the variety of now strange items, one might look at the contraptions that are goat-related: there are the rollicking mustard goat, the improved ferris wheel goat, the Royal bumper, the revolving goat, the bucking goat. Each of these pieces of equipment is given a full page of explanation and sales pitch below an illustration, and the explanation itself fascinates on several levels: its tone from a bygone era, the curiousness of the thing it is speaking about, and its ability to transport us to a past form of entertainment. Among products pitched are the trick bottom chair, the trick camera which emits a spray of water when the shutter is pressed, the branding and whirling table, the sliding stairs, and many other thrill-inducing, at times sadistic prank contraptions. Other sections of the catalogue, such as costumes and badges, might be less off-the-wall, but that doesn't negate their level of interest. This is scarce, with no copies of this particular catalogue located on OCLC and four copies in total of different iterations of the De Moulin catalogue found (both later and earlier). The DeMoulin company began in 1892 and is still in business today, with its most important business today being the manufacturing of band uniforms but also lines in other specialized types of attire. Its burlesque/vaudeville equipment business is now as dead as these forms of entertainment. Edge soiling on the wraps. An internal tear on last leaf. Light wear otherwise. Bookseller Inventory #
