With the permission of the Covington family, the North Park Historical Society is proud to reprint Donald Covington's community history and self guided architectural tour of a special San Diego neighborhood. The Burlingame tract is now a designated Historical District. This charming description of 30 homes along an easily walkable route in the tract was written, illustrated, and published in 1997 by Donald Covington, who passed away in 2002. The book features 20 sketches of the unique homes along the route. The North Park Historical Society is a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to the preservation of the cultural and architectural history of North Park, one of San Diego's earliest streetcar suburbs.
About the Author: Donald Covington (1929-2002) was a Professor of Design in the Art Department of San Diego State University. He held degrees in art from Southern Methodist University and the University of California, Los Angeles, and was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. His research in the history of architecture and community development focused on the historic mid-city suburban neighborhoods of San Diego, including North Park. He is the author of North Park: A San Diego Urban Village 1896-1946, an award-winning history book edited by Katherine Hon and published in 2007 by the North Park Historical Society with the permission of the Covington family.
