Book Description Paperback Library, 1971. Soft cover. Book Condition: Good. Two previous booksellers have stamped the inside front cover and the first page. Chaber wrote more than 20 novels featuring insurance investigators Milo March and Brian Brett. Both are very good at their jobs; they¿re smart, tough, honest (at least to the extent that they don¿t keep the money or jewels they are supposed to find) and with an ascerbic sense of humor. When Martin Raymond of Intercontinental Insurance calls him to work on a job while March is on vacation [The Day it Rained Diamonds], Raymond offers a generous bonus in addition to March¿s usual daily rate ¿ and expenses; ¿The last two words were wrung from him as if he were giving up a lung.¿ Both take their jobs seriously but the corporate life less so. Brett is constantly poking fun at his boss, Harvard-educated, Brooks Brothers-suited vice-president George Mallin who has no sense of humor; ¿He was a fairly nice guy, but he was still a vice-president and inclined to talk as if he had a promotion in his mouth.¿ Even though no situation is too serious for a wise-guy crack, both March and Brett are up on every dodge people, and especially crooks, try to pull on an insurance company. When he short-cuts Mallin¿s description of a suspicious policy, Brett explains, ¿I¿ve got a cynical outlook. That¿s what you pay me for. I see mankind in the worst possible light and usually it turns out to be correct.¿ Both have a fondness for bars, martinis and women. In Johannesburg [Once Upon A Crime] Brett sees singer/dancer Nena Parne, ¿¿not especially talented but the sexiest woman I had ever seen. She wore less clothes than hair and her figure was lush.¿ The March and Brett the stories take place from the late 50s to the early 70s. Jet travel is still in the future; it takes 8 hours to fly across the United States and 46 hours from New York to Johannesburg with stops in Lisbon and Accra [Once Upon A Crime]. The stories are well-written and well-plotted and, in contrast to most PI novels, don¿t take place at fighter-jet speed where the hero has no time to eat, sleep or do anything else except chase his tail and get beaten up. As in real life, crime investigation, as most things, takes time. Bookseller Inventory # 001304
