Description:

New York. 1961. Walker & Company. 1st American Edition. Very Good In Slightly Worn Dustjacket. 27. 368 pages. hardcover. keywords: September 9. inventory # 16709. FROM THE PUBLISHER - In 1950, shortly after he had won Italy’s highest literary award, the Strega Prize, Cesare Pavese committed suicide. Shocked and bewildered, his friends tried to find the explanation for the tragic act. Some suggested that the explanation lay in Pavese's disillusionment with Communism. Others more intimately involved in Pavese's private life believed the reason might be found in his unhappy love affair with an American film star: it had been a painful and protracted agony. (When told of his suicide, she remarked with chilling insularity, ‘I didn't know he was such a famous writer’—a bitter and ironic epitaph which might have been written by Pavese himself. ) The truth lay deeper. It was only revealed when Pavese's private Diaries were brought to light. For the Diaries revealed a tormented man struggling to come to terms with an alien environment and to achieve that most elusive of conditions, an emotional maturity consistent with a poet's sensibility. In this quest Pavese failed. He was a man in whose life the threat of suicide was always implicit, and sometimes explicit. Above all, and despite his extraordinarily powerful intellect, he was a man who sought, until the bitter end, for a ‘perfect love.’ His Diaries reveal the succession of harrowing disappointments that he met along the way with frankness and a pitiless self-analysis. THE BURNING BRAND thus makes painful reading; the book touches nerves which most of us cannot bear to have exposed. It is no accident that the Diaries have been hailed on the continent as ‘the finest literary journals since Gide.’ ‘A document of a strange, harrowing pathos. by a considerable poet and thinker. Astringent reading.’ —New Statesman. ‘A most interesting, eloquent, and moving book of undeviating sincerity. The publication of the Diaries was an act of wisdom and benevolence. We have been given a fascinating book by a good, sad, clever man’ - Philip Toynbee. Very Good In Slightly Worn Dustjacket. Bookseller Inventory #
