A romanticized history of the Trappist Monastery at Gethsemani, Kentucky, founded in 1848. Rev. Raymond, born Joseph David Flanagan, in 1903 in Roxbury, Massachusetts, was an ordained Jesuit priest. He became a Cistercian monk, entering the Abbey of Gethsemani in 1939, a few years before Thomas Merton, who lived and wrote at Gethsemani from 1941 until his death in 1968. The library markings, none of which are external, are a stamp on the title page and attachments along with a previous owner's name on the front free end paper. Otherwise clean with a sound binding.
