About this Item

Aaron Burr (1756-1836), a hero of the American Revolution and now a Broadway superstar, served as Vice President under Thomas Jefferson, took the life of Alexander Hamilton ( over 400 times) in a duel and was tried for treason when Jefferson accused him of plotting to make an empire of his own in the Western territories. This extraordinary novel is told in the form of a memoir, told partly by Burr at the end of his long life and partly by a young journalist in whom Burr confides. The novel is fiction but the characters and historical figures come to life under the brilliant direction of Gore Vidal. This is the rarest of books, a powerfully readable historical novel which re-creates with scrupulous accuracy and the originality of a major historical imagination the most significant years in the history of America. Book is as new as is un-clipped jacket ($8.95) in unmarked and unread condition. This is a collectors edition in every sense of the word. Protected in Mylar. Bookseller Inventory # 001035

From the Back Cover:

"Dazzling. . . . Burr is wicked entertainment of a very high order."
--The New York Times Book Review

"A tragedy, a comedy, a vibrant, leg-kicking life. . . . All of this and much, much more is told in a highly engaging book that teems with bon mots, aphorisms and ironic comments on the political process. . . . Enlightening, fresh and fun." --The Boston Globe

"A novel of Stendhalian proportions. . . . It is probably impossible to be an American and not be fascinated and impressed by Vidal's telescoping of our early history. . . . Always absorbing." --The New Yorker
