About this title

Synopsis:

Long before eating disorders and gap years were invented, eighteen-year-old Janni was doing both. In July 1973, with a figure finally to die for, and thirteen years of incarceration in an English boarding school over at last, the expat teenager returns to Africa, planning to do absolutely sod all for the next twelve months - except have plenty of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll fun in the sun. Only problem is, her destination is a desolate hotspot hundreds of miles away from anyone or anything remotely exciting: a small bush town bang in the middle of open savannah, with mud huts, dusty red tracks and upside-down baobab trees all around. Throw in a few odd-looking volunteers, some weird old colonials and a thousand or so locals, plus the parents, and that about sums Gombe up... Or does it? Beneath the tedious veneer, where life is just an endless cycle of ping-pong and Scrabble, the bush is a hotbed for adventure waiting to be discovered. Soon,Janni is taken to places, spiritually and physically, that even her overblown imagaination could never have dreamed.....

From the Author:

Bush Town Blues is based on the author's own turbulent experiences during the 1970s, when she spent a year in the bushlands of Northern Nigeria. Much of the detail and personal observations are drawn from her diaries written at the time.
