About this title

Synopsis:

This study presents new information about the four Quaker businessmen who helped found the London Abolition Committee in 1787 and remained active in the late anti-slave trade movement throughout their lifetimes. Drawing on previously unused primary sources, the study traces the close personal, business, social and religious ties binding the men together and shaping their abolition activities and arguments. By closely examining the lives of Joseph Woods, James Philips, George Harrison and Samuel Hoare, the study presents a new view of the factors shaping the arguments and strategies of abolitionism in Britain.

Store Description

Our shop is located in downtown Waterbury, at the crossroads of Routes I84 and 8. All are welcome to visit, browse, and buy. Don't bother coming if you absolutely hate shops with full cafes, as some people do, but should you come make time to enjoy a fine lunch or at least a cup of our own Bookman's Blend Coffee. Check out our website; like us on Facebook; read our blog, mostly written by student interns. In short, support open shops wherever the heck you find them. Our retail hours are Mon. - Fri. 8 a.m. to 5. Holidays by chance, very slim chance (always call first!) Weekend hours are limited, though we offer a High Tea (yes, really) from 12-2 on Sat. and usually are around for a few hours before and after, for bookish types. Dealers are welcome anytime, of course.
