About this Item

Inscribed with enormous wit and affection to satiric artist and close friend Robert Osborn by Calder using a Calder quote excerpted from the book that is printed on ffe verso. The quote reads "One of the problems/ confronting me is to get enough/ free time to work/ and not to go around talking about it." Calder has taken the first line and inserted in bold blue ink a different completion of the line (in italics here) so that it reads "One of the problems is Bob Osborn('s) a very nice guy in the long run. Sandy"." With a postcard picturing three of Calder's sculptures in the outdoor collection of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebaek, from Calder to Robert and Elodie dated by him July 13, 1987, postmarked from Denmark, in which Calder reports on how touring is like a tiring "campaign" ("oh to be 60 again!") and proclaims "the glorious Calders are by far the best at this fine museum." Alexander Calder, known to his friends since childhood as 'Sandy', was an American artist best known for his mobile sculptures. Championed by the Museum of Modern Art, his distinctive mobiles hang permanently there as well as premier institutions like the DC National Gallery. Commissioned to build sculptures and paint murals in several of Marcel Breuer's houses built in Litchfield County, CT. Calder, who lived in Roxbury in that county, Calder had many friends in the artistic community there, Robert Osborn and his wife Eloise being among the closest. Bookseller Inventory # 010205

Store Description

Johnnycake Books trades in rare and collectible books of most kinds, principally in fields of literature, illustrated, childrens, architecture/design, gardening and photography. We try to offer books that are a little unusual, offbeat and unexpected: most have a strong visual or design appeal. Our descriptions present our inventory as creatively and colorfully as possible, with occassional editorial commentary. We regard condition of our books as critical to our service: most are very good or better, in collectible condition. We are generally conservative in describing a book, even if that means it doesn't sound as good as it actually might be. We welcome your comments directly at johnnycake@snet.net or visit our website www.johnnycakebooks.com. Best wishes in your book collecting. Dan Dwyer
