An excellent history of the souvenir stationery issued (c.1849-69) in the form of pictorial writing paper which often folded to form a self-made envelope. Lithographs and wood engravings of local scenes and situations left room for only brief letters home, the illustrations being considered equally informative about the newly settled land. Lists 343 Gold Rush era letter sheets, including variants, giving the full title of each sheet, medium of reproduction, publisher, artist, etc. Complete indexing. Beautifully printed (natch) in black with red highlights on heavier stock with deckle edge pages.
