About this Item

Del Caualier Guarnello. CANZONE NELLA FELISSIMA VITTORIA CHRISTIANA CONTRA INFIDELI. AL SERENISS. D. GIO. Dí AVSTRIA. c. 1571. Eight pages, including a full decorated title page, verso blank, capital header on A2, five pages of text, with the one-page dedicatory poem under different header on A4b. Text in Italian. Sewn but disbound, yet fine with no chips, tears, or foxing. The victory of The Holy League, a coalition of Catholic states assembled by Pope Pius V, in the Battle of Lepanto in October, 1571, halted the advance of the Ottoman Empire in the eastern Mediterranean. This was the last great European sea battle to be fought mainly by galleys. It drew an outpouring of celebratory paintings and literary works in both Latin and the vernacular languages of the region. Very scarce. Bookseller Inventory # COB120004
