About this Item

(XIX) (1) 140 pages. Ilustrated from onstage photographs. Light brown cloth with gilt cover device and gilt spine titling. Dust Jacket. First Edition (Stated). 5" x 7 1/2". INSCRIBED in ink by author Oscar Hammerstein II on a front free endpaper, "To Wolfe, with gratitude for all he did to successfully re-launch this very old debutante. Sincerely, Oscar". The inscription is to Wolfe Kaufman, the Director of Publicity for the run of Carmen Jones from December 2, 1943 to February 10, 1945. Kaufman was a leading General Manager and Press Director for Brigadoon, S. Hurok's production of Hamlet, Paint Your Wagon, The Rose Tattoo and many other Broadway plays and musicals. On the front pastedown is the bookplate of Rita Allen, showing Ms. Allen reading a book in a theatre box, while other occupants of the box are looking at the production in the opposite direction. Rita Allen was a well-known theatrical producer in the 1950s and 60s (The Grass Harp, My 3 Angels, at the Rita Allen Theater and other venues) and was the founder of the Rita Allen Foundation of Princeton, New Jersey. Oscar Hammerstein II was a great American librettist, lyricist, producer and director. He collaborated with Kern, Youmans, Romberg and others, but his most successful collaboration was with Richard Rogers (Oklahoma, Carousel, The King and I, South Pacfic, The Sound of Music, etc.) He received eight Tonys and two Oscars. This VG+ copy has some fading and faded spotting at the edges and spine; The dustjacket has had some expert repairs and now probably rates Near Fine or better, in a clear mylar protective sleeve. A superb association copy. Always FREE SHIPPING via media mail to any United States address. Bookseller Inventory # 1276
