About this Item

London 1953, Frederick Muller, 2nd UK impression, hard bound in dust jacket, VG/Good+ condition ( dj shows light edge wear ),5 1/4 x 8, 243 pages, illustrations,.This is the thrilling story of the exploits of the French submarine Casablanca, commanded by the author, from the time of her escape from Toulon in April 1942 to the liberation of Corsica in September 1943 following the surrender of Italy.Admiral Darlan had ordered the French Fleet to scuttle at a given signal, but the Germans made a surprise attack on Toulon and the signal was never given. The ship's compan yof Casablanca were ready, however, and at the first warning they cast loose. First there was the defensive boom at the mouth of the submarine harbour of Murillon to be broken. Then came a surface dash across the Toulon Roads to where an anti-submarine net had to be negotiated—all to the accompaniment of fierce attacks from German planes dropping bombs and magnetic mines. Her important share in the War thereafter comprised a number of secret and highly dangerous missions to Corsica, involving landing agents and carrying arms and supplies for the Maquis—which meant running the German blockade several times—and finally the successful landing, inside the harbour of Ajaccio, of a detachment of French commando troops—the first liberation force to land in Corsica—in the face of 20,000 hostile Germans. This sailor's simple narrative, told with dignity and modesty and packed with action and suspense from start to finish, is in many passages not merely exciting, but hair-raising to a degree. It is a thrilling story of human bravery and daring, and an epic of submarine warfare. Bookseller Inventory # 35376
