Hardcover first edition - First printing. This bound volume includes the issues for entire first year of this publication which went on to become Cassell's longest and most successful such venture (Cassell is, of course, also known for publishing the first illustrated edition of Uncle Tom's Cabin.) Includes a new illustrated title page and frontispiece. Each folio sized issue contains 8 pages (although #13 was a double number of 16 pages) and is profusely illustrated and contains a combination of fiction, poetry, articles (including many on the Crimean War, including the encampment at Gallipoli), maps and various features like chess and draught problems, and crochet patterns. "The Arctic Crusoe" by Percy B. (Bolingbroke) St. John is serialized in the beginning issues, followed by his novel "Amy Moss or The Banks of the Ohio." 440 pp. Fair condition only in the original brown embossed cloth with gilt stamping on the front cover. The front cover is detached, and several leaves are missing - among them pp 17-20, 139-140, 191-192, and 269-270. Since there are no signs that these have been removed, it is possible that these were a binding flaw. Pp 141-142 is detached but present. A few pages have some minor edgewear, but in general the contents are in very good condition. Bookseller Inventory #
