About this Item

Single volume--six complete issues bound without individual covers or advertisements. Small quarto, 9 3/4" tall, viii + 976 pages, three-quarter brown leather over brown cloth with gilt spine titles. A good, clean, sturdy hard cover with minor shelf wear, leather rubbed through to boards at the corner tips, spine leather scuffed at edges top and bottom; hinges cracked but sturdy and binding solid, paper clean and moderately yellowed. This is the publisher's edition, printed from the original plates and includes all of the editorial material (articles, stories, poetry, etc.) of the separate issues but lacks the advertisements and individual covers. It was the practice of the time for most of the better literary magazines to issue such editions before melting down the original printers' plates. Note: 'The Century Magazine' was retitled from the earlier 'Scribner's Monthly' (thus the 'New Series' title statement) in 1881, with new management, under the editorship of the great Richard Watson Gilder, carrying forward its high standards for illustration and the best authors. Subject matters range from art, fiction, and poetry to history and science. As such it makes a terrific read as an anthology of its moment in time. Three-quarter leather over boards. Store Description

After thirty years, our Newbury Street shop in Boston has closed and our stock is now available only on-line. Our efforts have always been directed toward good reading copies, but we still have a large selection of first editions and scarce titles. We continue to specialize in all areas of fiction, giving added attention to science fiction and mystery. Our largest non-fiction selection is in history, with emphasis on America and Britain. Though we have always been a general bookseller, with over 250 subject categories to chose from, we maintain strong departments in biography, poetry, drama, essay and music as well.
