CHEMUNG COUNTY DOCUMENT. Indenture made 29th. of March 1793 between Samuel Meddaugh of the Town of Chemung County of Tioga in the State of New York and John DeWitt of the County of Orange. Land was bounded on the northwest by lands owned by Lebeues Hammond, Esquire, southeasterly by lands of Stephen Gardner Waterman on the Tioga River, lot number 48. Signed by Samuel Meddaugh with partial seal remaining. Signed in the presence of Jno. Morse and Abraham Miller. 8" x 13" on watermarked paper. Some wear at former folds with a few pin holes. Included is a later 1815 promise to pay $24.07 to Aaron Konkle. Signed by Thomas W. Brunson, Samuel Middaugh, Jr. and witness by Matthew M. Reynolds. 4" x 6 1/4" The watermark appears to be of CH (in a clogged circle) from Dover, Delaware 1791 as pictured in A CATALOGUE OF AMERICAN WATERMARKS 1690-1835 by Thomas L. Gravell and George Miller number 164 with illustration on page 55. This document contains some signatures of some of the early settlers of the future Chemung County. Bookseller Inventory #
