16mo. (17 cm.) vi, [1], 8-156p. Plus 4p. ads. Green cloth with gilt letters on the front cover and the spine and blind stamped top and bottom borders of flowers on both covers. Illustrated with black and white drawings. Just touches of wear to extremities, cloth clean and bright, gilt bright, else near fine to fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. According to the Preface, this is a work designed mainly for neophytes in the game of chess; but, in a large majority of Openings treated, they are followed out through the first twelve moves. G.H.D. Gossip [1841-1907] was an Amerian-English [born in New York to English parents, but raised in England] cjess master and writer. He made his living primarily as a writer and translator, writing for newspapers and magazines. By 1874, Gossip was the chess editor of The Hornet and in that year, after several years' work, he published his magnum opus, The Chess-Player's Manual¿A Complete Guide to Chess. Perhaps his best known work is The Theory of Chess Openings published in 1879. He wrote several other works on chess including the volume offered here. The title page of this volume has a red sticker printed in white with the Behrens publishing information which has been pasted over the Fitzgerald publishing information.
