About this Item

159 pp., 4to, original maroon cloth with gilt title and cover ornaments. Illustrated with reproductions from photographs and engravings. Most of the photographs and other illustrations pictured here were originally published in Mendolsohn's 1929 2-volume "Chicago and Its Makers." At a published price of $25, the 1100-page work did not sell well, hence this more compact version. This copy inscribed and signed by publisher Felix Mendelsohn on front free endpaper: "To Mr. Alexander S. Flett, who, from all reports, is peculiarly able to appreciate the charm of 'Old Chicago.' May he live long enough so that the newest building pictured here will be an 'Antique.' Felix Mendelsohn. Aug. 31/32." Born in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Alexander Sinclair Flett (June 6, 1922 - Nov. 16, 2011) was indeed blessed with a long life, including 32 years in the Theater Arts Department at San Francisco State University. Moderate wear to covers with bump to lower corner of front board, nick to fore-edge of front board, superficial scratches to front board, endpapers somewhat darkened, light foxing to first and last few pages, else very good First edition, Limited edition of 1000 copies, this #46.
