Book Description Ginn and Company, Boston , Massachusetts, U.S.A., 1929. Cloth. Condition: Good. Davis, Marguerite; Laite, Blanche Fisher (illustrator). Presumed First Edition. This orange cloth bound book has red and black lettering. The front cover illustration is of a boy bottle feeding a fawn. The spine lettering is faded. Light soiling over the boards. The cloth has been reglued to the backstrip, noticeable only on the inside rear margin. Spine crown and heel are shelf worn. The rubber stamp of the state normal school library are found on the endpapers, which are in robin's egg blue with a little black sambo and tiger illustration. Another previous ownership stamp appears on pages 65 and 159. There are a few stray pencil marks inside, but the contents are generally clean, unsoiled, and uncreased/untorn (again, a few minor exceptions). Color illustrations and clever black-and-white period illustrations appear throughout the text. Contents include classic stories (e.g., the hare and the tortoise, King Midas, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel), as well as explorations into Native American and Eskimo life, with a nice blend of children's fantasy, holiday themes, animal stories, basic botany, and work/occupational insights. 261 pages. Evidence of early audiece research: "Five thousand children read sixty stories and decided which ones they liked best. This book contains the thirty-one stories which received the most votes.".
