About this Item

An American reprinting of a work originally issued in London in 1852, Dickens' delightful, first-person history of England, largely a story of its royalty and religion from the Druids and ancient Briton kings to the 1840s, when Queen Victoria came to the throne, is told with the easy grace of a legendary story teller's understanding of his audience. Includes a table of the reigns of the various royalty from the Saxons under Alfred the Great to the coronation of Queen Victoria. First Edition Thus; 5 x 7 inches, 402 pages in maroon cloth-covered boards with stamped decoration on front cover, gold title box on spine with "Arundel Series" in black at lower end of spine. No publication date though probably the 1880s since William L. Allison Company was in business only from 1869 to 1896. Boards show rather light surface and edge wear except for bumped corners. Front interior hinge cracked, other hinges interior and exterior are intact; binding remains moderately firm. Text edges are soiled with top edge showing a pair of small stains; text itself is age-toned, o/w boards and text are complete and unmarked. As with much of Stevenson's work, this history holds the attention of readers of all ages. Bookseller Inventory # 005503
