Reade, Charles. THE CLOISTER AND THE HEARTH. A Tale Of The Middle Ages. In Four Volumes. London: Trubner, 1861. First Edition. A GOOD to VERY GOOD set in original publisher's gray-green morocco gilt. Spine and a few inner hinges expertly repaired. Despite overall wear appropriate to the grade, this copy in original cloth nevertheless retains eye appeal. There is a small hole in the title page of first volume which thankfully affects no letters, a tear in the margin of title of the fourth volume now neatly repaired, a few stains, some foxing, and soiling. THE CLOISTER AND THE HEARTH is very, very difficult to find in any kind of original condition and our copy is priced to sell in comparison to equal examples ($1,500- up). Swinburne described this novel as "among the greatest masterpieces of narrative" and as recently as the 1960s, Reade's great historical novel was considered the key book for anyone attempting to put together a fine collection of Victorian fiction.
