About this Item

1st Printing. Signed. 1 pages. Published in 2001. Rare Annie Proulx and William Matthews collectible item. A pristine copy of the "Evil Companions 2001 Literary Award" Broadside of "Close Range: Wyoming Stories", signed by both Annie Proulx and William Matthews. Features a lovely excerpt from her second collection of short stories, "Close Range: Wyoming Stories". Published in a small and limited one-time-only print run that sold out shortly thereafter. There is no ISBN. The Broadside is now rare. A brilliant production by William Matthews: Oversize format. Full size is 12 X 17 inches. Text by Annie Proulx. Reproduction of the watercolor painting, "Close Range", by William Matthews. "Evil Companions 2001 Literary Award" boldly printed in black on top. Eminently suitable for framing. Printed on archival, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published by The Evil Companions, a Denver-based group of writers and artists who assess and celebrate one another's work, and choose an Annual Winner, who is honored with a broadside of his or her work. Annie Proulx herself now lives in Wyoming, but was closely associated with the evil-doers at the time of "Close Range" 's publication. "Close Range" is Proulx's finest collection of (eleven) short tories, two of which are now regarded as masterpieces: "The Half-Skinned Steer" was selected as one of "The Best American Short Stories of The 20th Century" by John Updike. "Brokeback Mountain", the now-classic story of the passionate and ultimately tragic romance between two cowboys, first appeared in the New Yorker Magazine, was first issued in book form in the United Kingdom by itself, and became the basis of the great film by Ang Lee in 2005, with the late Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. It remains Annie Proulx's single most beloved story. The book itself is lyrically interspersed with reproductions of six watercolors by William Matthews, the greatest living American artist in the "Western" tradition. "The wild country - indigo jags of mountain, grassy plain everlasting, tumbled stones like fallen cities, the flaring roll of sky - provokes a spiritual shudder. It is like a deep note that cannot be heard but is felt, it is like a claw in the gut" (Annie Proulx). An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, item for Annie Proulx and William Matthews collectors. This Broadside is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black pen by Annie Proulx. It is also very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker by William Matthews. This Broadside sold out shortly after publication and is now collectible. It is eminently suitable for framing. As far as we know, this is one of only two signed copies available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Please note: Annie Proulx's signature is TINY. But it's scarce, and it's there. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction in 1993 for "Postcards". Winner of the National Book Award (in 1993) and the Pulitzer Prize (in 1994) for "The Shipping News". One of the finest writers of our time. A flawless copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ANNIE PROULX TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). Bookseller Inventory # 18559
