About this title

From the Preface: History and politics have been a passion of mine since high school. When I purchased the Col. Peter H. Peirce homestead in 1968 and established my law office there, it was inevitable that I would write this book. My research on Peter H. Peirce progressed throughout the 1970's By the early 1980's I could have published a respectable historical biography, but each piece of new information drew me deeper into the search. One of my greatest concerns was the delay in bringing forth this book. I am most grateful that Mr. and Mrs. G. Ward Stetson and Middleboro historian and author, Mertie E. Romaine, read my earlier manuscripts and offered their suggestions to me during their lifetimes. This encouragement was invaluable. For several years I could be found in the evening at the Middleboro Public Libary and on Saturdays at the Pilgrim Society in Plymouth, reading every edition of the Old Colony Memorial and the Middleboro Gazette up to the death in 1901 of Thomas S Peirce, the last of Peter's ten children. I examined every one of the hundreds of Peirce deeds and mortgages recorded at the Plymouth Registry of Deeds, and hundreds of business and personal documents now in the archives of the Middleborough Historical Association, Inc.
