Description:

First edition (not stated). [14], 248 pages. Hardcover: H 32.25cm x L 25cm. Gray dust jacket lightly soiled with a few small stains, bumping along dj's top edges with a few negligibly shallow chips at spine heel and rear panel's bottom edge; dj now presented in a mylar Brodart protector. Blue cloth with vibrant gilt stamping to spine and front board; slender discolored abrasion occurring at spine heel and along bottom and top edges of boards. Light toning to edges; minor foxing/toning to interior leaves which otherwise remain quite clean. Binding is firm. A very good copy in a very good dust jacket and still a remarkably nice copy of a book which, when found, is often far more battered. This edition of COLONIAL HOUSES; PHILADELPHIA PRE-REVOLUTIONARY PERIOD is printed on better quality paper than the fairly common Bonanza reprint allowing one to perceive greater detail in Wallace's meticulously detailed b/w photographs. Working between 1902 and the 1940s architectural photographer Philip Wallace documented numerous historic buildings not only in Philadelphia but throughout the mid-Atlantic region north to Boston and south to Delaware and his extensive collection of glass plate and photo negatives are held by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Wallace co-authored (with William Allen Dunn) two other significant regional architectural references - COLONIAL CHURCHES AND MEETING HOUSES, PENNSYLVANIA, NEW JERSEY AND DELAWARE (1931) and COLONIAL IRONWORK IN OLD PHILADELPHIA; THE CRAFTSMANSHIP OF THE EARLY DAYS OF THE REPUBLIC (1930) - which were also published by New York's Architectural Book Publishing Company with all three books comprising the firm's "Colonial Architecture in Old Philadelphia Series." Please note that this large book has an approximate shipping weight of 5.75 pounds (2.6 kg) and will require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.
