Book Description T. M. Cradock, 48, Paternoster Row and sold by all other Booksellers in Town and Country., London, 1839. Large 8vo. 5.75 x 9 inches. xii + 643 + [1] pp. publisher's advertisements. Bound in original cream cloth with contrasting maroon morocco title label, gilt. Deckled edges. Spine sunned but otherwise a very good copy. 1944 signature on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 4 engraved plates, including frontispiece, by wood engravings in text and by tables. Published anonymously but known to be the work of Thomas Hartwell Horne (1780-1862). A comprehensive guide to livestock breeding, rearing and feeding which succeeds in covering virtually all aspects of agriculture. The appendices include specimen forms for farm accounts, a monthly calendar of farm activities and observations on the weather. The title, first published in 1805 'had a most extraordinary, almost eternal, career, written by a man who could only have been an amateur as it was' (Fussell), being rewritten throughout the nineteenth century, until the Fourteenth Edition of 1900. This seventh edition was based on the sixth, substantially revised by William Youatt (1776-1847). The Perkins Catalogue suggests that the original edition was 'to some extent based on the anonymous work The Complete grazier' of 1767. Fussell is splendidly scathing about 'writers of farming treatises who had probably never done any actual work on the land.Thomas Hartwell Horne is a glaring example of the author of miscellaneous works, who set himself up to be an authority, and to teach stockbreeders how to do their job,' calling him a 'pseudo-expert.' Certainly he was never a Lincolnshire Grazier, although he was aided by communications from farmers in other counties. Horne, who had a classical education and achieved fame as a biblical scholar, had issued the first edition to supplement his meagre wages as a barrister's clerk. He later received an honorary degree from Aberdeen and was ordained. In his later career, he worked as a cataloguer and bibliographer in his librarian post at the British Museum.
