All edges gilt. Slight wear to corners, edge damp stains on pastedowns and flyleaves and occasional traces of scattered foxing; otherwise a very good copy. Bookseller's label of H. J. Rook, Faversham. Illustrated by chromolithograph frontispiece. Published anonymously, this self-improving juvenile novel was the first full length work of US author, Maria Jane McIntosh (1803-78). She also wrote children's stories demonstrating moral sentiments under the name of Aunt Kitty. The nautical background to the novel relates to her brother, James McKay McIntosh, being a US naval officer.
