About this Item

Special edition, this an unnumbered copy of "25 copies printed for press and presentation" as stated on limitation page and scarce thus. Folio, polished maroon linen, gilt titles front and spine, gte, sides untrimmed, 77 photogravure plates, xiv + 252. Appendices incluide lits of engravings after Constable's work, sales catalogue for Foster's Gallery on Pall Mall on 15 May 1838, a discussion of forgerers of Constable's works and a chronlogiocal list of Constable's chief pictures and dated sketches. Some loss of cloth and attendant threading to hinges of spine, internals fine. Owenership copy of Hamilton Easter Field, (18731922) , an important American artist, teacher, author, critic, collector and patron of the arts, whose collection is at the Portland Museum of Art, with his bookplate (a basket of floweres designed by "AL" on the pastedown. Given his prominence at the time of publication of the book, it would make sense that Field would have been presented one of these special copies. Bookseller Inventory # 009869
