About this Item

White and green boards with a photograph of a big sternwheeler coming down the Coos River. Green map endpapers. SIGNED by author on half-title page. Numerous photographs. Faint traces of dried glue where front pastedown endpaper was orignally affixed to inside of front board, and mildest of shelf-rubbing to top and bottom of spine. Minor edgewear to very good dustjacket and a 1.5" closed tear to dustjacket at fold, alongside spine. A tight, bright, SIGNED copy of a now-scarce account of. This is the story of the Coos River Valley (of Oregon), where the stream was the highway for transporting freight and passengers to and from the remote region. Real roads didn't come into the valley until the 1930's. Ms. Mahaffy's labor of love took her five years of extensive research involving interviews, digging up letters, and gathering old newspapers, and stories of people and times on the Coos River, wherever they could be found. Chapters include: The River Country; Enterprises; Schools; Churches; Miscellaneous (The Big Freeze, U.S. Mail, Rowboat Pioneers, Steamboat Pioneers; The Michelbrink Incident, etc.); River Babble; Amusements; River Bustle; Tragedies; Stories; Biographies. Near Fine in Very Good Dustjacket. Bookseller Inventory # 70661
