Description:

Volumes 1 and 2 only of a three volume set. Full title: OUR COUNTRY. A HOUSEHOLD HISTORY FOR ALL READERS, FROM THE DISCOVERY OF AMERICA TO THE PRESENT TIME. BY BENSON J. LOSSING, LL.D. WITH OVER FIVE HUNDRED ILLUSTRATIONS, BY FELIX. O.C. DARLEY. AND TWELVE FINE ENGRAVINGS ON STEEL. Uniformly bound full leather bindings, each hardcover H 25.25cm x L 19.5cm. Spines decorated with five raised bands with gilt stamped lettering and decoration; boards with dark pebbled leather. Outer spine leather lighter in tone than the leather which overlaps onto boards and at board corners. All edges gilt. Both volumes have professional repairs to hinges and new endpapers; each front free endpaper has ink gift inscription dated for January 1920 so presumably repairs are contemporary to that date. Toning to interior leaves. VOLUME I: Paged as i-xviii, [list of illustrations page/blank], [2], 1-596. Slender splitting descending 4cm from top of front joint with mild scuffing for remainder lengthwise, board corners scuffed and worn, mild staining to rear board but with strong mottling to front board with centerpiece gilt stamped lettering mostly rubbed away. Front free endpaper and front flyleaf pulled with binding split evident between front fly and initial frontispiece although binding is still firm. Some scuffing and flaking to gilt fore-edge. Comprised of Book I "Discoveries From 1002 to 1609." (chapters I-XIII inclusive to page 168), Book II "Settlements From 1606 to 1733." (chapters I-X inclusive to page 298), and Book III "Colonies From 1733 to 1763." (chapters I-XXIII). A good copy. VOLUME II: Paged in sequence with preceding volume as i-xii, [list of illustrations page/blank], [597-599], 600-1392. Board corners worn and scuffed, mild staining to boards with front board's centerpiece gilt lettering still quite bright, mild scuffing along front joint. Fingerprint smudges on copyright page. Comprised of Book IV "The War for Independence, or the Political Revolution. From 1760 to 1789." (chapters I-XL inclusive to page 1116) and Book V "The Nation. From 1789 to 1856." (chapters I-XXI). Table of Contents page xii concludes with Book V-Chapter VI summary with no indication of missing leaves; however, Book V actually concludes with Chapter XXI. A very good- copy. Broad nineteenth century overview of American history but still attractive antiquarian books. Please note that these two large volumes have an approximate shipping weight of 12 pounds and will require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.
