About this title

Alan Cranston's (1914-2000) career parallels the course of history. He was always, in Teddy Roosevelt's phrase, "in the way of things happening". This biography, by his sister, proves it. She draws a lively portrait of the young Alan. As an eager foreign correspondent, he heard Hitler speak, saw the crowds admire Mussolini on his balcony. It is now almost common knowledge that Hitler sued Cranston for publishing an unauthorized version of 'Mein Kampf'. Alan was determined to help Americans realize what Nazism could mean to the world. Always concerned about peace and human rights. Alan Cranston wrote a book about the Senate fight over the League of Nations which is still referred to (The Killing of the Peace). A founding president of the California Democratic Council, he helped turn the tide of politics in the state. During WWII, he worked with Elmer Davis in the Office of War Information. He was the first elected controller of California since 1880. But his goal was always the Senate - once there he turned down possible nominations for vice-president and secretary of state. When the political timing was right, he ran for the office and succeeded, rising to distinction as majority whip. Vice President Mondale called Cranston "the most decent and gifted member of the United States Senate".
