About this Item

7-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches, 208 pages. Publisher's red cloth, gilt decoration and spine. Condition of the book is GOOD, with very slight fading, front hinge cracked but strong. Owner's penned inscription on front end-paper. First published in 1913, this is a fascinating melding of art and religion by this newspaper writer and artist. It contains 129 transformation drawings with Christian messages and lessons intended for Sunday school teachers with a chalk-board, and demonstrates, for instance, how to transform a drawing of Bethlehem with a star into a Christmas tree. Most interesting is a little-known Titanic reference, where the lesson, "That speed and greed must of necessity end in dire disaster" accompanies a drawing of a four-funnelled vessel steaming through the quiet water, only to be transformed into the same vessel striking a partially-submerged iceberg. The best example of such a "lightning artist" was Winsor McCay, whose early Vaudeville work included just this kind of transformation drawing. art, stacks 0.0. Bookseller Inventory # 8060
