About this Item

Early issue, bound and presented as the first issue. With frontispiece engraving of the 'Cachalot' and 7 additional illustrations from engravings of whaling on plates and with a folding map showing the whaling cruise around the world. 8vo, original royal blue cloth gilt lettered on the spine and with a whale in gilt on the upper cover. xx, 379 pp. A clean and attractive copy, solid with the hinges in excellent state, the blue cloth fresh with only minor age, internally very clean. A CLASSIC OF WHALING ADVENTURE. Kipling had this to say of it: "It is immense--there is no other word. I've never read anything that equals it in its deep sea wonder and mystery." Bullen was first mate on the Cachalot and the book covers his adventures on his first whaling mission from being stuck in New Bedford with no ship to witnessing an epic battle between a sperm whale and giant squid in the East Indies. A very interesting glimpse into a way of life lost to time. Bookseller Inventory # 27319
