Synopsis: Last Oasis takes viewers to India, China, Mexico, the U.S., and the Middle East to investigate a new era of water scarcity and the future of water conservation and recycling.
Review: The Third World has looked to the United States for examples of how to make the world more livable, and now that water is in shorter supply, they hope to build huge dams like our projects on the Colorado River. But even as they try to repeat our history, we are trying to undo it or at least rethink it, as shown in Last Oasis. Lush photography and interviews with scientists and indigenous peoples tell a tale of increasing desperation as more people look for more water where there is none. The environmental devastation caused by dams threatens some of the few remaining places of natural beauty, but American-led conservation efforts may prove ultimately more beneficial (and cheaper!) for us all. This last installation of the Cadillac Desert series makes the story of water compelling and personal, and it holds forth the promise of a new way of looking at it. --Rob Lightner
