About this Item

Quarto. [20], 345 (i.e. 247]. A rare work translated originally from the Greek into Latin in the 5th century but only one copy survived and that copy was translated into this edition in 1529. The original complete manuscript has disappeared (though three pages survived and appeared 38 years ago in a library at Zwickau). The editor, Johannes Sichart, acknowledges the assistance of Janus Cornarius in his dedicatory epistle. The contents are identified in Paul Lehmann's Johannes Sciharus (Munich, 1911), p. 216-218. This edition also contains Latin versions of writings by the 4th century Greek physician to the Emperor Julian (the Apostate) Oribasius, including the first appearence of his Euporista, a collection of medical advice for travelers. Oribasius was physician to the Emperor Julian (the Apostate). These also are first editions of the Latin text. Garrison-Morton 1959.1 Norman. Jeremy Norman writes in his HistoryofMedicine.com website: "From a clinical point of view, the two works of Caelius Aurelianus .represent the high-point of Graeco-Roman medical achievement." He further notes: The Greek physician Soranus of Ephesus, . rejected the theory of humors in favor of one based on atomism; it was this school that first developed the useful distinction between chronic and acute diseases." Complete editions of the 1529 edition have become uncommon. Bound in 3/4 vellum over decorative paper covered boards spine lettering in ink, lower page corners with some dampstaining. A very good copy. Bookseller Inventory # 018884
