Description:

xx, 362 p. mostly illustrated. Foreword by Jack Knox, afterword by Frank R. Ahlgren. Calvin Lane Alley was the editorial cartoonist of the Memphis Commercial Appeal from 1945 until his death in 1970. He was the son of J.P. Alley, an internationally famous cartoonist. After studying art in Memphis and Chicago, Alley became a cartoonist for the Kansas City Journal in 1939. When the Journal stopped publication in 1942, he became the editorial cartoonist of the Nashville Banner. In 1945, he was assigned by the Commercial Appeal to fill the position that was first held by his father. He continued his father's 'Hambone' feature and created his own family newspaper strip 'The Ryatts' in 1954. He was succeeded by the artist Jack Elrod in 1967, and Alley spent the rest of his career doing his daily editorial cartoon. [Loc.:7]. Bookseller Inventory #
