The Calgary Eye Opener had begun as a Canadian humor magazine, but evolved into an imitator of the most popular humor magazine of the era, Whiz Bang. In 1932, Antoinette Fawcett, the ex-wife of the publisher of Whiz Bang bought the magazine. The principal employee of Eye Opener when Fawcett bought it was a young artist, Carl Barks, who wrote and drew most of the magazine. The humor was low-brow and sexist, and the annual issues taunted postal authorities with topless photographs of women. Barks, often working under pseudonyms, is credited with raising the standard of the magazine with better drawing and more sublte work. At the end of 1935, with the magazine's finances in disarray, Barks left for the Walt Disney company, where he worked on Donald Duck comics, inventing many of the enduring characters and themes of the comics. This run includes the last two Barks years and the first without him, offering the opportunity to explore Barks' influence (Barks continued as a contributor through 1936). See Carl Barks and the Disney Comic Book by Tom Andrae and The Unexpurgated Carl Barks Cartoons. Very scarce. No library holds more than a few individual issue from the Barks era. Bound volumes. Covers and a few illustrations trimmed close; pages tanned, else a nice set. Bookseller Inventory #
