About this Item

Small 4to (9½" X 4¼"), opening to 38" X 16½". Very good. Faint edgewear (mainly to two outer panels), with several small fold separations expertly, archivally closed and nearly undetectable. Superb, attractive example of this Depression-era map. The two sepia-tone outermost panels feature a faux "seal" with printed signature of Frank F. Merriam, governor of California, ostensibly welcoming visitors to the state -- although a small inset "Warning" further down discourages Joad-type "Oakies" and other transients who flocked to California at the time: "While attractions for tourists are unlimited in California, it is necessary to advise persons seeking employment not to come here at this time. When opportunity arises California will gladly make it known." Unfolded, this side (printed entirely in brown) displays a large line drawing of the state identifying major cities and major highways, with small insets showing "Los Angeles and Vicinity" and the same for San Francisco. Remainder of this side consists of "Principal Points of Tourist Interest" text. The verso is printed entirely in green and runs landscape, with north (Oregon) at left and south (Mexico) at right, and east (Nevada and Arizona) compressed along the top margin: "This is a bird's-eye picture of the State of California, showing many of the principal points of interest." A delightful line drawing by Charles H. Owens, with tiny depictions of huge Redwood forests, numerous famous Spanish missions, oil fields, mining towns and other landmarks.
