Synopsis:

California. The mere mention of the name conjures up thoughts and images as diverse as the state itself. With the geographic size, population, and economy to be a thriving country, California is unique. But are its social problems unique or do they represent issues shared, today and in the future, with the other forty nine states and the global community? The editors and authors of California′s Social Problems shed light on these questions and others in their fascinating analyses of a variety of social situations, policies, and trends in the Golden State.

About the Author:

Charles F. Hohm is Professor of Sociology and Associate Dean of the Division of Undergraduate Studies at San Diego State University. He received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Southern California, is the founding president of the California Sociological Association, and is currently vice president of the Pacific Sociological Association. His most recent books include Population: Opposing Viewpoints (2000), coedited with Shoon Lio and Lori Jones, and Global Social Problems (1996), with James A. Glynn and Elbert W. Stewart. He has published numerous articles on demography, environmental sociology, housing, and child maltreatment in journals such as Demography, Sociological Perspectives, Sociology and Social Research, Social Science Journal, Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Housing and Society, International Journal of Sociology of the Family, and Growth and Change. He is the past editor of Sociological Perspectives and the 1998 winner of the Pacific Sociological Association′s Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award. His current research interests are in social demography and the adjustment of refugees.

James A. Glynn is Professor of Sociology for the State Center Community College District. He has taught sociology for more than 30 years, and he currently holds classes at the Madera Center in California′s great Central Valley. A contributing author to the first edition of California′s Social Problems (1997), he also collaborated with Charles F. Hohm and Elbert W. Stewart in writing Global Social Problems (1996). Previously, he and Stewart produced four editions of Introduction to Sociology (1971, 1975, 1979, and 1984), a text that was translated into Spanish and Portuguese editions. In 1990, he worked with Professor Hohm and others in organizing the California Sociological Association; he served as its third president and has been executive director for the past 10 years. From 1996 to 2000, he served on the Editorial Board for Sociological Perspectives, the official journal of the Pacific Sociological Association, an organization from which he received the Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award in 1997. For the past 2 years, he has written a weekly column for the Madera Tribune in which he frequently addresses issues of sociological importance. Now involved in local community affairs, he serves on the Board of Directors of the Madera County Arts Council and the Citizens Commission to Plan and Implement the Government Center.
