Book Description Doubleday & Company, Garden City, NY, 1953. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. 287 p. The DJ has some small pieces missing and is chipped along the edges. The book is in fine shape. It is signed by Caen "Greetings and regards to Miss Timanns - who never calls it Frisco - I hope - even in Baltimore. Best Caem" There is an outstanding summary of Herb Caen's life in WikipediA. It reads in part: "Herb Caen was a San Francisco journalist whose daily column of local goings-on and insider gossip, social and political happenings, painful puns and offbeat anecdotes -"a continuous love letter to San Francisco" appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle for almost 60 years (excepting a relatively brief defection to The San Francisco Examiner and made him a household name throughout the San Francisco Bay Area" "A special Pulitzer Prize called him the "voice and conscience" of San Francisco." "Caen had considerable influence on popular culture, particularly its language. He coined the term beatnik in 1958[12] and popularized hippie during San Francisco's 1967 Summer of Love.[13] He popularized obscure¿¿¿often playful¿¿¿terms such as Frisbeetarianism,[clarification needed] and ribbed nearby Berkeley as Berserkeley for its often-radical politics. His many recurring if irregular features included "Namephreaks"¿¿¿people with names (aptronyms) peculiarly appropriate or inappropriate to their vocations or avocations, such as substitute teacher Mr. Fill in, hospital spokesman Pam Talkington, periodontist Dr. Rott, piano teacher Patience Scales, orthopedic specialist Dr. Kneebone, and the Vatican's spokesman on the evils of rock 'n roll, Cardinal Rapsong.". Book Description Doubleday & Company, Garden City, New York, 1953. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition. Flat-signed by the author on the second front end paper. You can see the covers of the book in the photographs provided. They have a little bit of handling soiling. The spine is slightly darkened. There is light creasing at the spine ends and a few small bumps/dents on the edges. The spine is just slightly slanted forward. The interior of the book is in excellent condition. I didn't see any soiling at all. There aren't any markings or attachments. With the exception of the author's signature, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The book is solidly bound, and I saw only one small turn-down corner crease. I've priced this to be the least expensive of the few signed copies for sale on the Internet. 'Herb Caen was a San Francisco journalist whose daily column of local goings-on and insider gossip, social and political happenings, painful puns and offbeat anecdotes ("a continuous love letter to San Francisco", appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle for almost sixty years. A special Pulitzer Prize called him the "voice and conscience of San Francisco." Caen had considerable influence on popular culture, particularly its language. He coined the term ''beatnik'' in 1958 and popularized ''hippie'' during San Francisco's 1967 Summer of Love. He popularized obscure¿ terms such as "Frisbeetarianism", and ribbed nearby Berkeley as "Berserkeley" for its often-radical politics. His many recurring if irregular features included "Namephreaks"¿--¿people with names (aptronyms) peculiarly appropriate or inappropriate to their vocations or avocations, such as substitute teacher Mr. Fillin, piano teacher Patience Scales, and the Vatican's spokesman on the evils of rock 'n roll, Cardinal Rapsong.' He also wrote, "One day if I do go to heaven I'll look around and say, It ain't bad, but it ain't San Francisco." Writes one internet reviewer 'All praises due to the king of ellipses! This book is by far the best homage to a city I have read to date, Caen is a true insider, with a writing style that is succinct and insightful. This is not news to anyone who has lived in the Bay Area in the era of print papers. The book is a great city history.'. Signed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # 001555
