Synopsis: In this by turns intimate, funny, and touching memoir, twins Luther and Wesley Buchele, born in 1920 on a farm in southeastern Kansas (an area memorialized by Laura Ingalls Wilder in her book Little House on the Prairie) fondly remember their five older brothers, their adored mother, and their childhood in a time when family farms were the norm. Despite the death of their father in 1930, and the Great Depression-accompanied by three years of record-setting drought, grasshopper invasions, and sky-darkening dust storms-the family, led by their mother, a frugal country "school marm," managed to keep the farm their ancestors had homesteaded on Kansas Osage Indian land in the late 1800s. Just Call Us Lucky is a story of deprivation and joy, of hardship and accomplishment, as the twins and all five of their older brothers went on to achieve professional success and good lives.
