About this Item

This is a true first edtion of London's "breakthrough" novel. The following description is from a review article of London's novels in the March/April issue of "Firsts" magazine by publisher Robin H. Smiley. ALL of the features he mentions are present in this copy. Macmillan 1903, states "set up, electrotyped, and published July 1903" on the copyright page. "The book is bound in green cloth with gold embossing and red and black ink-stamping on the front panel and spine. The top edge is gilt," (but faded somewhat). "Decorated by Chas Edw. Hooper. It has 17 full-page illustrations, including 10 plates in the text by Philip R. Goodwin and Charles Livingston Bull. 231 pages plus an advertising leaf in the back. First edition, first issue, with the July 1903 date on the copyright page and two pages of publisher's advertisements at end. NB: The frontispiece is missing, "And beyond that fire, in the circling darkness, Buch could see." There was an enormous number of copies in the first edition for the time: 71,584. Set in the Yukon, "The Call of the Wild" is a mythic, poetically told dog story." Jack London's best and most enduring work, BAL 11876. A master professional book restorer has reglued the spine in place, added new headbands, reglued several places in book block that were loose, tightened hinges, treated cover corners but made no alterations to pictorial endpapers. Boards lightly worn on extremities, ownership signature on half-title. A strong Very good. In new facsimile DJ. Ms. Smiley estimates the value of Very Good copies without DJ as $750-$2,000.
