First Edition. 57 sepia photograph images on 35 single sided Pages, Original Hard back imitation crocodile binding lettered in gilt, tied with cord, in fair condition, general corner/edge wear, with title and A. Kerim Baghdad and Hasso, Bros. Baghdad on front cover. Contents good, minor ageing of paper. The photogravure plates on heavy paper are good and clean, with printed titles to each below each image in English. Noticed to the inside cover on brown end-page " To mother with my love B. 1925", also within one image is ‘R.A.F. Official Photograph’. It would seem the first editions were not dated, so believe this to be a First Edition of the photographic images by A. Kerim of Baghdad in the early 1920s. Views include: Ashar Creek, Whiteley Bridge Ashar Creek Basrah, Sheikh Gazal Market Ashar Basrah, The Shrine of Sheikh Omar, the Tomb of Sit Hobaida, Kadimain the Holy City, The golden domes and minarets of the Kadimain Mosque, the entrance gate to the Kadimain Mosque,pilgrims with their camels on the way to Kerbala, ancient musical instruments,Ctesiphon as it looks from an aeroplane ‘R.A.F. Official Photograph’ (by the binders mistake there are 2 full page images of this photograph), the Ruins of Babylon- Temple of Marduk, Tenish money changers at Baghdad, An Sheikh, Kurdish Lady in her best costume, a group of Assyrian Mountaineers and lots more. Book Description Hasso Brothers, Baghdad, Iraq, 1925. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 73 sepia photos on 50 plates (complete) (illustrator). Oblong 4 to photo album in origina reptile dark brown paper over boards, with bright gilt title on the front, and original brown strong tied. There are variants to the bindings, none having a date of publication which was between circa 1925 and circa 1935. The reptile skin appears to be the first variant, with a patterned brown paper later that included the photographer and publisher names on the front cover. In this copy, they are on a small label on the inside of the back cover. Printed by Rotophop A.G. in Berlin according to ETANA. Bland endpaper, then 50 pages of heavy card printed on one side only, most with one image 8 1/2 by 6 inches. Scenes , people and Sumerian ancient sites as sepia photos, complete and clean, each captioned in English. Basrah, Baghdad, Kadimain, Babylon, Ctesiphon, Nineveh, Mosul and an assortment of street and market scenes with Iraqis going about daily chores, including Arabs, Jews and Kurds. No foxing or stains. Housed in original card slipcase. Covers rubbed to edge with bump to upper corner of lower board, also affecting margin of 7 final leaves. 1-inch tear to margin of single plate (image unaffected) and 3-inch tear to slipcase. Name and adderss of former owner to slipcase; case surface soiled and worn but has protected the book very well. A fascinating glimpse into the inter-war period, with many images featuring the people of Iraq going about their daily work and business. Subjects incude archaeological sites like the Tallisin Tower in Baghdad, street and market scenes in Mosul, local tribesmen and a 10-year-old Chadean bride in traditional costume.
