About this Item

Glossy red and white hardcover. Hard cover lightly rubbed. Light reading wear on side page block. From back cover: 'An often-overlooked aspect of World War II history is the important role played by Allied photographic reconnaissance squadrons. At the beginning of the war it was quickly realized that reconnaissance of the vast Pacific theater would be essential, so the first two (later increased to four) Marine photo squadrons were established. This is the true story of one such squadron, VMD-254, and its heroic and sometimes amusing exploits. Two crews from this squadron, flying B-24 Liberators, accompanied one of the most important reconnaissance missions of the war when they successfully photographed the Japanese stronghold, Truk. The photographs and information provided from that mission eliminated the need for an Allied invasion, saving countless American lives. This book features over 150 photographs taken by the men of Marine Photographic Squadron 254. These original photos, maps and charts have never been published, having been in the private collections of VMD's veterans since the end of the war.' Foreword by Major General Louis J. Conti USMC (Ret). Book dedicated to 2nd Lt. John M.J. Bishop USMCR. Dedication states: 'On November 20, 1944 at 1:55 P.M. a Douglas SBD "Dauntless" dive-bomber crashed into the sea, two miles north of Henderson Field on Guadalcanal. The two young Lieutenants inside, Allen Barber and John Bishop, were never seen again.' Contents: Dedication, Foreword, Acknowledgements, Introduction, The First Marine Photo Squadron is Born, Making Aerial Maps: A Photographic Record, Going Overseas, Arrival in the South Pacific, Truk, Bougainville, Big Missions, Going Home, Epilogue. Appendices: Squadron Yearbook, Commendations/Citations, VMD-254's Airplanes, Maps/Charts, Muster Roll. Bibliography. Index. Copyrighted by the author in 1998. 190 pages.
